Panama Facts

BRIEF
HISTORY:
Panama has been a Republic since
1903, when, backed by the U.S., Panama achieved independence from Colombia and
signed a treaty for the construction of the Panama Canal. The canal opened in
1914 and was run by the U.S. until the Torrijos-Carter Treaty of 1977 gave
Panama total sovereignty over the canal and the adjoining lands on either side
of the waterway.
In the late 1970s Panama became a major banking and
financial center due to its corporate law, and use of the U.S. dollar, making it
the Switzerland of Latin America. In 1989 Panama’s dictator was overthrown by
the U.S. military and democracy was reinstituted in the country.
Today Panama is one of the most stable democracies in the region, with a
booming construction industry and a planned expansion of its infrastructure,
including the canal. |
